Nearly all other ultra-portables come with 13.3- or 14-inch displays. It comes with a 10th Generation Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of memory, and 1TB of solid-state storage. Oddly, the last is split between two 512GB solid-state drives, a configuration that will offer a slight advantage for most consumers. The WQXA resolution measures 2,560 by 1,600 pixels, which puts it in between full HD and 4K. The colors are brilliant, the text appears razor-sharp, and the picture quality remains steady even when I view the screen from an angle. The Gram 17’s 1.5-watt stereo speakers and its HD webcam are adequate for quick Skype sessions. The power button has an integrated fingerprint reader that can enable one-touch logins. On a large laptop, especially one this thick, there’s much room for input/output ports, and the Gram 17 boasts its fair share. There’s a full-size HDMI output, three USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports, a USB Type-C port, a headphone jack, and the connector for the power adapter. There’s even a microSD card slot, a once-common feature that is rapidly disappearing in the age of cloud storage. Photographers will appreciate its inclusion on the Gram 17.

I mean, literally. HP cleverly uses a drop-jaw hinge to fit USB Type-A ports on each side of the laptop so you can charge your accessories or connect peripherals. On the laptop’s right side is one USB 3.1 Type-A port next to a microSD card slot. On the left side, you’ll find a second USB 3.1 Type-A port and headphone/mic jack alongside a Thunderbolt 4 port for fast transfer speeds or connecting to 4K monitors. The Intel Iris Xe graphics in the Envy is much improved from the integrated solutions of yesteryear. Finding a laptop that lasted for 10 hours on a charge was like mining for gold. Now, it’s becoming a standard. The Envy 13 reaches that mark and then some, lasting for 11 hours and 15 minutes.
