How do OpenAI plugins work?

OpenAI plugins work by listing the enabled plugins in the prompt shown to ChatGPT, as well as documentation to instruct the model how to use each plugin. For example, if a user wants to use the Expedia plugin to plan a trip, they can type something like:

User: I want to go to Paris next month.
ChatGPT: Okay, let me help you with that. You can use the Expedia plugin to find flights and hotels. To use it, type “Expedia:” followed by your query. For example:

Expedia: flights from New York to Paris in April
Expedia: hotels in Paris near the Eiffel Tower

ChatGPT will then use the Expedia plugin to query the Expedia API and return relevant results. The user can also ask ChatGPT for more information or suggestions using natural language.

Why use OpenAI plugins?

OpenAI plugins enhance ChatGPT’s capabilities and allow it to perform tasks that would otherwise be impossible or difficult for a language model.
